"This bulletin has been edited in Spanish for the Spanish speaking community. The translation into English is to keep the World Wide Education Team informed and it is translated by a non-native speaker. Please use it only internally and do not distribute it."

Extending the program's offer with the “Academy Curriculum”

“Academy Curriculum” is the name Cisco has given to the set of curriculum that make up the Cisco Networking Academy Program: CCNA, CCNP, Fundamentals of Network Security, Fundamentals of Wireless LANs, IT Essentials I, IT Essentials II, Fundamentals of Voice and Data Cabling, Fundamentals of Unix, Fundamentals of Java Programming, and Fundamentals of Web Design (this one is only available in the United States).

All of them have been developed by a Cisco team internally known as “World Wide Education”; the first four, have been established with Cisco's exclusive sponsorship; the other six, have been sponsored by several top technology and communications industry leaders: (TICs): HP, Panduit, Sun, and Adobe. The last six are known as “Sponsored Curriculum”.

An important scope of this curriculum from the TICs point of view, is that it allows institutions to offer their students a more comprehensive education, and at the same time, it allows for a segmented education, if that's what the students or the institution wants. It seems to be a contradiction between these two possibilities, but there isn't any. What Cisco and the other sponsoring companies are offering to the institutions (Universities, Technological institutions, Technical and Basic Secondary Education Schools ) is a menu full of options to better attend society needs in any of its organizations.

Based on these premises, I am going to present a collection of brief articles that will describe the following topics:

- A view of the current and future demands of the global economy societies' to the staff dedicated to activities in the TICs' field.
- A macro view of the kind of professionals being educated by the education systems and their association with social needs.
- A proposal of the kind of actions that should be taken by the education systems to serve better to those societies' needs.
- A proposal for the transition from the current situation to the institution's most appropriate considered situation.

Let's start with the view of the current and future demands of the global economy societies' to the staff dedicated to TICs' field.

For the companies of today's world, it is not enough to be an expert in one of the TICs' areas; not even being an expert in all of them is enough, if such a Utopia happened. The “New Company”, as we will call it, is demanding a new professional, able to participate in line with the different businesses' fronts; this person does not have to be an overall expert (even when the expertise level won't be so focused), what is required, is for this person to fulfil a function that complies with the organization's needs.

And which are those needs, generally speaking? It is not easy to summarize and applied this summary to every organization, but the following items seem to be appropriate:

The new professional required by the New Company, should have:

- A solid education in technical areas such as engineering, and information systems, with a systemic view. For example, it is not enough to be an excellent software engineer, you should also know about networking, hardware, and other TICs' areas. The systemic view of the relationship between these areas will be a company's demand.
- Ability for teamwork, participating in complex projects, in objectives as well as in knowledge areas. This is a “competence” that the New Professional should have, sine qua non. Independent work, with no interaction with other organization's members, is a prehistoric fact. The interaction with professionals of other areas, countries, and even cultures is now a need.
- Basic knowledge in economics and market and businesses related topics. The company has always a main goal: make money. Other goals (not less important) rely on this one. It is very important to know the company's business to be able to work towards its main goal.
- Personal skills, such as: problem solving, continuing education, global economy understanding, etc. This is a new way to express what we have always been looking for in Universities: a comprehensive education, where comprehensive includes concepts that were once limited to the social.

One might ask: Is this the type of professionals the education entities are shaping?

One answer to this question is the objective of the next article. Meanwhile I invite the readers to let me know me their opinion to the following email: jtabares@cisco.com.

Attention…

Academy Connection in Spanish!

Cisco Networking Academy Mexico, in an effort to promote the interaction between the users of the program in Spanish-speaking countries, has developed a project for the launching of the Academy Connection in Spanish, which will be Networking Academy's information portal, and will address the needs of the different countries that make up the program. The portal will offer them useful, dynamic, and attractive information, turning the site into a daily processes help tool.

For this purpose, we want to create a correspondents team who provides updated graphic and non-graphic information, regarding Academy's relevant events. The information submitted will be published including the credits to the correspondent who wrote the document, and he/she will be asked for permission to edit and correct his/her writing by an editorial board. The publications will be every two weeks.

Every 4 months, we will count the news sent by every correspondent and review the quality of the contents. This information will help us to determine who are the best correspondents. We will grant an award to the first five.

If you want to be part of this project, sharing information and experiences, please send you application to Jennifer Merino jmerino@netacadlatam.com , to create a database and locate our collaborators.

Remember that this is an excellent opportunity to be part of a new interactive project. We count on your help to make this site a very helpful tool with updated information useful to all Spanish-speaking countries.

Attention Academies and Instructors…

Many academies have requested banners or canvas for their labs, graduations, and events. This time we have the opportunity to get canvas from the corporate office, with the following feature:

- Size: 2.20 x 1.10 meters
- Material: canvas with 8 side buttonholes
- The banner costs $ 570 M.N. Mexican pesos, including shipping and handling (to keep this cost, we need to order at least 50 banners, and by this means we ant to know if you are interested in buying a banner.

Due to this wholesale price and shipping price, we won't be able to issue fiscal supporting documents.

To order the canvas, we need your answer prior to January 15, 2004.
As always, we are counting on your support.

My experience in the Cisco Networking Academy Program...

The spreading of the Cisco Networking Academy Program inside universities is a great opportunity for teachers and students to strengthen and widen our networking knowledge.

Before attending the CCNA courses, I had a vague idea of networking, and I wasn't able to fully understand the role of the involved devices.

Today, thanks to the Cisco Networking Academy Program, I feel capable of analysing, developing, designing, and managing large scale projects and networks; I am confident and certain that I can manage myself in this technologically evolving networking area.

After attending the CCNA courses, my interest to strengthen my knowledge has grown even more; now I am able to make the right decisions at work.

I want to thank CISCO SYSTEMS for being part of my professional education, and also to the Universidad de Occidente, an institution that offered me the great opportunity to attend the CCNA certification course.

From the CATC...

Studying during Christmas.

Today I am more conscious than ever on the daily time we have to dedicate to study for the new topics, and new programs, but also to look at the growth of the Academy Connection… I could ask, have you ever entered any of the community's discussion forums? Or have you ever used the tools offered by each of the current courses? … Let me tell you that we have in our web page a collection of videos that can help you through the process of several activities, from the registration in a Bridge Course, to the duration of it and the name of the instructor and its location. Also other more frequently used activities such as students' classes, registration, etc. But what really caught my attention is that our system needs to be debugged, don't you think?

I could ask several questions to our LMCs: The students and instructors listed under your Academy are actually the current ones? After answering this one, you could answer another one, are instructors' and students' profiles updated? I am telling you this, because every time we send news or press releases to the Regional Academies, you cannot imagine the volume of mails that are rejected, and the reason is the lack of updated profiles. We could do a lot for the Cisco community. Well, the important thing is that we start.

Talking of positive topics, the “bridge” courses are coming soon, and it is important for the Regional Academies to be aware that these courses will update our CCNA curriculum. We will use remote mode for the CATC replication in Regional Academies , and Instructor-led for the Regional to Local Academies replication. Regional Academies will have the opportunity to offer this training during a “Retooling”, or as an additional course. Don't forget that version 3.0 in Spanish will be available until March 2004.
Another important issue is that we will have to prepare our lab kits, making all required changes.

What we have written here is only the beginning of a very intense 2004 schedule, which we will expose in further publications. We want to wish all the Cisco Networking Academy Mexico community “The Magic of Christmas should bring good feelings to your hearts and 2004 should be a year filled with achievements, health, and happiness”. Best wishes from Cisco Academy Training Centre Mexico.
