It is already March, and we have started the countdown for Academy Conference 2005. Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of many people, Academy Conference seems to become the most important event for the IT academic community in Mexico.

History.

Puebla de los Angeles was founded in 1531. Such a beautiful city, that it seemed to be built by the same angels. According to the legend, this is the origin of its name.

Puebla has always played a leading role in the national affairs. In May 1862, the republicans headed by Zaragoza defeated the French army and on May 1863, the site imposed by the French finished with the fall of the state capital. Also Puebla was stage of the battle of November 18 of 1910, where the Serdán siblings conspired against the regime of Don Porfirio Diaz, originating the Mexican Revolution. One can visit the house where Aquiles Serdan used to live; besides that one can buy typical candies well known as borrachitos, camotes or rompope made by the Santa Clara nuns.

The City of Puebla.
The City of Puebla of Los Angeles (the Angels), is the capital of the state of Puebla and it is located center-west of the state of Puebla in the central highland from Mexico . Weather is warm with rains in summer. She has an altitude average of 2160 m above the sea level. Temperature this time of the year is 13 -15 F.

Puebla , the City of the Angels, is located some 80 miles southeast of Mexico City on the highway connecting Veracruz with the capital of the country. Founded in 1531 by Fray Toribio de Benavente, Puebla now has a population of 1.900.000.

Now-a-days, Puebla is the third most important city in the country, only preceded by Monterrey and Guadalajara . It has a population of 2 million inhabitants and it is capital of the state of the same name, with more than 4 million inhabitants. It is the third state in the country with the highest number of university students and the first state with two places declared as Unesco World Cultural Inheritance: the city of Puebla and the Franciscan Monasteries of Popocatépetl.

The Centro de Convenciones Puebla , the host city of Academy conference 2005, is the only Convention Center in the country located in the historic Center in the middle of building and historic sites of great values.

Puebla attractions.
Puebla offers a choice of museums, ranging from family collections of art, railway carriages and locomotives, pre-Hispanic and viceregal culture reflected in the works of art of the time, to museums showing the artistic achievements of the Colonial period.

The Toads.
The Toads is a famous street in downtown Puebla , where once can find a variety of places to have a meal, drink coffee or dance with friends. Furthermore, mariachi groups cam be found here, as well as the Pasita, where a special local fruit drink can be found. (Sundays only).

Casa de la cultura.
In former times, this was known as ST. John´s College, which dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. Within the center there are art exhibits, independent fil screenings, a bookstore and various cultural activities. Open Monday-Sunday from 9 am to 9 pm. You can algo catch the Puebla . You can also catch the Puebla Turibus here, which has 14 local tourist spots. A day pass costs $90 pesos.

Artist´s Corner and Parián.
This place is a popular local craft market located near the Zocalo. Here you can find many workshops of local artists. It is an ideal spot to spend a quiet evening, enjoying coffee, a book, and live music, while being in the company of Pueblan painters and sculptors.

The Zocalo and the Cathedral.
The Zocalo is one of the most spectacular spaces in Puebla , the center of the city where all the streets meet at a garden surrounded by beautiful arches and a variety of restaurants and cafes. It is the “heart” of the city, a great family place with a true Pueblan atmosphere. The beautiful Cathedral (located on the Zocalo) is guarded behind a fence of angels. It was designed in 1575 and has renaissance, baroque and neoclassic architectural styles.

Santa Clara street.
This street is for those who have a sweet tooth, as it is famous for typical sweets and candies. Local sweet shops can be found along these blocks and many of the sweets date back to colonial times.

Biblioteca Palafoxiana. Palafoxian Library.
This library is considered one of the most beautiful and important wordlwide. It opened in 1646 by Don Juan de Palafox y Mendoza with 5,000 volumes and thanks to various donors, it has grown to have 42,582. It is best to see during the day, as there is no electricity in the library at night.
